American Truck Simulator: Building Development the Right Way

American Truck Simulator: Building Development the Right Way
Doing game research the right way with a field trip

The recent expedition of the American Truck Simulator map team across California and neighbouring states marks a significant step in the game’s development, specifically for the California Rework project.

We really appreciate those that get to the nitty gritty in the world of development with a gaming title, and why not throw in a road trip for good measure, this looks very interesting indeed. The team consisted of Jan (Janek), Nicolaj (RACERTOFT), Hoang (Johny), Juraj, and Martin (Raffnit).

This immersive journey, spanning 3500 miles and covering four states, provided the team with invaluable insights into the diverse landscapes, urban environments, and cultural nuances of the regions they aim to digitally recreate.

Traveling through California, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah, the team had the unique opportunity to experience firsthand the intricate details that make each area distinct. From the architectural marvels and bustling streets of major cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas, to the tranquil expanses of the Arizona deserts and the rugged terrain of Utah, each location presented its own set of characteristics.

This variety is not just geographic but cultural as well, offering a glimpse into the different lifestyles and atmospheres that the team seeks to capture in the game.

The importance of this trip goes beyond mere observation; it’s about translating real-world experiences into the virtual realm with accuracy and authenticity.

As they traversed various terrains, the team gathered a wealth of information on road networks, building styles, natural landscapes, and urban planning. This knowledge is crucial for developing a game that not only looks realistic but also feels true to the life of a trucker navigating these vast and varied regions.

Making sure that the game reflects real world simulation

In cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles, the team could observe the dynamic urban sprawl, noting how each city’s unique skyline and infrastructure could be adapted for the game. The chaotic yet organized nature of these cities, with their distinct neighborhoods and landmarks, provides a rich tapestry for the game developers to draw from.

Meanwhile, the quieter, more scenic routes through states like Arizona and Utah offered a contrasting experience, showcasing the serene beauty and isolation of the American Southwest.

This hands-on research approach demonstrates the team’s commitment to delivering an immersive and authentic trucking experience. By driving the same roads, experiencing the same cities, and soaking in the same landscapes as their in-game counterparts, they are better equipped to recreate these environments with a heightened level of detail and realism.

Living the life, and bringing it to ATS

The journey undertaken by the American Truck Simulator map team is not just a road trip; it’s a deep dive into the heart of the regions they’re depicting. This venture is likely to have a significant impact on the California Rework project, enriching the game with nuances and details that only firsthand experience can provide.

Players can look forward to a game that more accurately reflects the diverse beauty and complexity of these American states, offering a virtual trucking experience that’s as close to the real thing as possible.
