In the 1960s and early 1970s, a pocket rocket from Italy was tearing up rally stages and turning heads on the roads. The Lancia Fulvia 1.6 HF S1 was a true trailblazer – a pioneering sports compact car unlike anything else at the time.
While most performance cars of the era were larger, heavyweight rear-wheel drive bruisers, the featherweight Fulvia took a radically different approach. Its compact dimensions and lightweight construction, including aluminium body panels, gave it an agility advantage over rivals.
Yet it packed a punch with its rev-happy 1.6-litre V4 engine producing over 115 horsepower – an impressive power-to-weight ratio.
While it had a short production run ending in the early 1970s, the Lancia Fulvia 1.6 HF forever etched its legacy as an influential vehicle. This feisty road-going rally machine created a blueprint for how to make an affordable compact car fun to drive. The hot hatch segment it helped spawn shows that Fulvia was well ahead of its time.
