Are you a gamer? Do you sit in a cave or RGB circus room? How about pizza and energy drinks? Check my Merch, Frag Out and more.

Think back to the 1980s and 1990s (and even now). If you told someone you were a gamer, they might have pictured you as:

  • Someone who is lazy.
  • A person who is alone and doesn’t have close friends.
  • Someone who stays hidden away.
  • Not connected with their family.
  • Someone who didn’t get a good education.
  • Someone who spent all their money on arcade games or gaming stuff.
  • Basically, all of the above and more negative things.

But here’s the reality: for many of us, gaming was a way to step away from the everyday world. It was a place where we could be ourselves and have fun (sorry to our families and partners, but it’s true!).

It’s like someone who loves reading a book, painting, watching a movie, or binge-watching their favourite TV show. These activities let people get lost in something they enjoy. So why is it okay for others to do these creative or absorbing things without judgment, but gamers often face criticism?

A big reason for these stereotypes is that the people who judge probably haven’t ever played a video game, visited an arcade, or really thought about what gaming is all about. It’s like when your parents or partner say, “Come watch this movie, you’ll hate it,” and you have no interest in it.

This was our sanctuary, do you know why? Because we are a group of people that all like to game

Instead of trying to understand, some people make quick judgments about gamers. Sure, there might be some gamers who fit the “pizza-eating, greasy controller” image, just like there are gamers who are all about energy drinks and merchandise. But the truth is, gamers are as diverse as any other group in society.

I know many people who play games. They were (and still are) very educated, competitive, friendly, and funny. Some are even professional athletes who compete in top-level esports.

Sure we miss the grand old days of Arcades and comics (do you know every time i think about that, the lost boys film springs to mind). So if you are a gamer, carry on enjoy, have fun.
