History of Drag Racing
The roots of drag racing go back to the 1930s on the dry lake beds of Southern California. People who loved cars started making their engines better and pushing their speed. The first organized drag racing event took place in 1949 at the Goleta Air Base in California. In 1950, the first commercial drag strip opened in Santa Ana, California. This helped move racing off the streets and into a safer, more organized environment.
The Rise of Organized Racing
A key figure in drag racing history is Wally Parks. In 1951, he formed the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). This organization brought rules and safety standards to the sport, making it more legitimate. The NHRA held its first official race in 1953 in Pomona, California.
