Rule Changes and Car Evolution:

  • “Junk Formula”: The decade began with what was known as the “junk formula” era (1930-1937). This opened up the regulations, allowing a wider variety of cars to participate, including those with connections to passenger car manufacturers like Studebaker and Ford. Engine displacement limits were significantly increased. For example, in 1930, the allowed displacement jumped from 91.5 cubic inches to 366 cubic inches.
  • Supercharger Ban: With the exception of two-cycle engines, superchargers were banned for most of the decade.
  • Return of Riding Mechanics: For a time, including the 1930 race, riding mechanics were once again mandatory.
  • Front-Wheel Drive Challenge: While rear-wheel drive cars ultimately proved successful, the early 1930s saw a strong presence of front-wheel drive machines, showcasing different engineering approaches.
  • Advancements: Cars featured advancements like more aerodynamic bodies compared to earlier eras. Tire technology was still developing, often requiring drivers to manage wear carefully. Brakes were typically drum brakes.

Notable Races and Drivers:

  • 1930: Billy Arnold dominated, leading almost the entire race (198 laps) and becoming the first driver to complete the 500 miles in under five hours with an average speed over 100 mph without needing a relief driver.
  • Louis Meyer: A prominent driver of the era, Meyer showcased the capabilities of different engine configurations.
  • Increased Speeds: Average race speeds continued to climb throughout the decade, reflecting improvements in car design and track conditions.
