The GASS 1987 cup cars all star series in iRacing continued with its great racing and series for the SoBo Sportsman Division. Here we have all the details of the race and current standings. Be sure to visit the GASS socials and join up in their discord.
After last week’s session issue, week 2’s program featured GASS’s first heat race. With 10 cars in the paddock, all 10 were loaded into a single heat session. Joe Segalla (81) and Steve Hilbert (10) made contact and drew an immediate yellow flag.
But once the field sorted itself, it was a clean 11 lap run. Ryan Messer (1) went wire to wire, but it took every inch of his Monte Carlo to hold of hard charging Dave Gargaro (42dg). At the stripe, it was Messer taking the checkers by a scant 0.010 over the 42dg.
It was shaping up to be more of the same in the heat race as Messer and Gargaro checked out on the green flag. But on lap 11, Messer lost his back end coming off turn 2, slid up the track and lost a big handful of positions.
Gargaro had to get on the binders to avoid, but was able to get his Big Pub & Cheese machine back to pace quickly, and over the final 24 laps stretched his lead to over 2.6 seconds.
Deep in the field, the Canadian Contingent, including Messer, Byron Bartlett (7) and John Wilson (75) were ganging up on a game Lowell Jewell (52). Messer made his way through the mosh pit on his way back through the field up to a third place finish. Lowell held off the Northerners for a fourth place finish.
With the feature win, Gargaro pulled to within 4 points of Championship leader Ryan Messer. Jewell made the biggest move, improving 4 spotsup to 4th.
The Sportsman are back in action next Tuesday with the first of 3 extra distance races. They’ll be going 40 laps in the feature in race 1 of the Ayers Iracing Paints Triple Crown.
